The Unexpected Invitation
I have to admit, when I applied to Hacker Cottage, I didn’t think I had a chance of getting in. To be honest, I didn’t. I was only accepted because my friend Joe dropped out. But hey, a last-minute invitation is still an invitation, right?
So, I packed my bags and headed to Ottawa, ready for whatever the weekend had in store. The moment I stepped off the train, the crisp autumn air hit me, carrying the earthy scent of fallen leaves. I felt a mix of excitement and trepidation.
What is Hacker Cottage?
Hacker Cottage is organized by AGIV, a local community that hosted a hack house earlier this year. The premise was simple: no real expectations other than to present what we built at the end of the weekend. No competition, no pressure—just creativity and collaboration.
It sounded perfect for me, like a breath of fresh air in a world often filled with deadlines and stress.
The Big Idea
Initially, I thought I would tackle a massive project: an AI ad creative engine to generate all the ad creatives for my games. I was excited but quickly realized the scope was way too big for a weekend.
The first day was a whirlwind of ideas, brainstorming, and way too much caffeine. After a sleepless night filled with coding and pacing the floor like a caged animal, I had a moment of clarity. I fell in love with a different idea: a cruise rating app. The spark ignited a passion in me that I hadn’t felt in ages, compelling me to focus entirely on that.
Revamping My Vision
On day two, I decided to give my app a proper website. Previously, it was just a stretched-out version of the app itself, lacking any personality.
I spent hours clicking away, the sound of my keyboard clacking under the soft glow of my laptop screen, fueled by late-night coding and a lot of coffee. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I had a site that I was proud to pitch.
When we presented our projects that evening, the atmosphere buzzed with anticipation, and it was exhilarating. People from all over gathered to listen, including some sponsors who were genuinely interested in what we had built.
Connections and Conversations
One of the highlights of the event was the beautiful catered meal. The aroma of roasted vegetables and grilled chicken wafted through the room, drawing everyone in. It was a great opportunity to mingle and network.
I met angel investors and had a fascinating conversation with a guy named Thomas. He had years of experience working on startups and shared his journey with me, each word resonating with the weight of his hard-earned wisdom.
Hearing his story helped align my vision for CruiseStar, my cruise rating app, like pieces of a puzzle falling perfectly into place.
